Superb performance by skipper Biplab Samantaray and opening batsman Girija Rout powered Odisha to a thumping 10-wicket win over Saurashtra on the penultimate day of their four-day Zone-D league match in the Shafi Darashah All-India Cricket Tournament at Bangalore today.
Samantaray, who hit a century (131 off 214b, 16x4, 2x6) in the first innings, scalped five wickets in Saurashtra`s second innings to set up the victory for Odisha. Chasing 98 for win in the second innings, Odisha rode on unbeaten knocks of 48 and 36 by Subhrajyoti Mishra and Girija Rout respectively to romp home without losing any wicket.
Earlier, resuming their first innings at the overnight score of 273 for three, Odisha declared at 405 for six, thus taking a lead of 139. Saurashtra were dismissed for 236 in the second essay.
Opening batsman Girija Rout and Deepak Behera were other notable performers for Odisha, hitting 157 (332b, 20x4, 1x6) and 52 not out (31b, 5x4, 2x6) respectively in the first innings. The win fetched Odisha six points, including one bonus point.
But despite the huge win, Odisha failed to make it to the knock-out round. They finished their league engagements with nine points from three matches. In their first two matches, Odisha drew with KSCA Colts and lost to Haryana by nine wickets. Against KSCA Colts, Odisha secured three points by virtue of taking a 10-run first innings lead.
